Perched on a hill and sloping from its very top, with concentric spiraling streets, Sarnano is one of the many towns in the Marches to have preserved the characteristics of the fortified castle, with its original walls and gates that have remained nearly untouched. The warm colours of the small houses and the buidings in general provides an overall sense of peace and quiet. In te Piazzalta rises the Church of S.Maria Assunta with a beautiful façade and a number of exceptional works of art inside. Flanking the square are other noteworthy municipa buildings, such as the Palazzo del Popolo, the Palazzo dei Priori, the Palazzo del Podesta and the Pinacoteca - gallery of paintings - that houses ont of the most fascinating works of faith in sarnano: La Madonna con Bambino ed Angeli by the great Vittore Crivelli. Even if you are not into art, Sarnano is the place to be. Surrounding the town are endless pastures, pristine mountain air, a fantastic variety of flora and fauna. As if by magic, the very green hilltops of the summer turn into ski slopes in winter and the nearby winter resorts of Sassotetto, Frontignano and Maddalena have slope that suit all levels of skiers as well as qualified ski instructors. Also, nordic skiing is practised in the area of Ragnolo, with schools and slopes of various difficulties. A stadium, tennis courts, fishing lakes, swimming pools, bowling alleys, riding school, minigolf, shooting grounds, school of para-gliding are also available throughout the year. Last but not least Sarnano is one of the oldest but best equipped thermal centre in the region with inhalation treatments, hydro treatments, rhinology, water therapy and gynaecological treatments all in agreement with the National Health Service. Once a year the Piazza Alta turns into an open air venue for a host of summer events, like classical music concerts, il Palio del Serafino ( a historic reenactment with competitions auch as the Tug-of-war, the Race of the jars, the Climbing of the pole and the Cutting of the trunk) and the Nationsl Market Exhibition of Antiques and Artistic Craftmanship, just to name a few.
