Cartoon competitions and festivals have been springing up in every corner of the world over the past couple of decades. From small exhibitions accommodating 50 artworks to large shows with hundreds--sometimes over a thousand- cartoons on display, there is a wide variety of events boosting interest in cartoons and satirical art. The Biennial Exhibition of Humour in Art in Tolentino is one of the most prestigious cultural Festivals which since 1961 has been dedicated to the promotion and popularisation of the caricature and humorous art. The first Biennial of Festival of Caricature and Humour in Art was conceived, organised and directed by the Tolentino doctor and caricaturist Luigi Mari. Sixteen nations were represented in the first edition and since then participants have steadily increased, proving that Art intertwined with Humour and Satire is absolutely thriving and resourceful; today the Festival is open to artists, both professionals and amateurs from all over the world. Winners of the different sections are awarded prizes in money or commendations and their works of art will become the property of the International Museum of Humour in Art. The Festival mounts prestigious side-shows attracting hundreds of visitors, artists and cartoonists. Inaugurations of the art exhibitions are held at the majestic and imposing Castle of La Rancia 7 kilometers from Tolentino.
