Urbs Salvia Archaeological Site

urbisAGLIA.jpgUrbs Salvia, once the meeting point of several ancient roads, is Le Marche’s largest archaeological area. Founded in the 1st century BC it was utterly destroyed by Alaric in 408 so the people moved to the top of the hill and settled down in the current little town of Urbisaglia . Urbs Salvia is an exceptional place that allows visitors to step back in time, way back to Roman times either by simply walking through the remains or viewing any of the performances held on that mesmerizing stage. The ruins include a remarkably well-preserved amphitheatre, dating from 75 AD, that was home to water battles as well as fights fought between gladiators and wild animals, and which is now used for magical performances of classical drama or concerts in the summer; a sacred area encircled by a cryptoporticus frescoed with enchanting hunting scenes; a very large theatre; an aqueduct; a cistern; along with a number of gates, walls, tombs and baths. Due to permanent excavations and findings Urbs Salvia archaeological area is steadily growing into a major enchanting site so it just can't be missed !
